How to Prepare & Be Storm Ready

Preparing for severe weather and natural disasters is essential to protect lives, reduce damage, and recover quickly—whether facing hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes, or severe storms. Being prepared means staying informed through local alerts, creating a family emergency plan, assembling a disaster supply kit, securing your home, and knowing evacuation routes so you can act quickly and confidently when conditions change.

Know Your Risks:
Understand the risks you and your family may face. It is important to learn the risks specific to your home and the ways to assess your risks if you are away from home. Know how and when to act before, during, and after different hazards.

Make A Plan:
Preparing for emergencies means having a clear plan whether you need to evacuate or shelter in place. Start by creating a family communication plan to stay connected, choose an out-of-town contact, and designate safe meeting locations; practice evacuation routes, ensure everyone knows how to shut off utilities, and plan ahead for specific needs such as pets, seniors, and individuals with disabilities so your household can respond quickly and safely in any situation.

Build A Kit:
Assemble a portable, easy-to-carry disaster supply kit that includes essential items like at least one gallon of water per person per day, a three-day supply of non-perishable food, a flashlight, extra batteries, a first aid kit, a whistle, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio; it’s also important to safeguard critical documents such as insurance policies, identification, and bank records by storing copies in a waterproof container so they remain protected and accessible when you need them most.

Take Action:
Put your plan into action by securing the right insurance and understanding your coverage, documenting your personal property, and taking steps to protect your home from potential damage; stay informed by signing up for emergency alerts and monitoring local authorities, regularly practice drills for all risks, evacuations, and sheltering in place so everyone knows what to do.
