Forensic DNA Analyst

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Services Laboratory, an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory, is currently accepting applications for a Forensic DNA Analyst position in the Forensic DNA Section.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs serological and DNA analysis of biological samples recovered from evidentiary material.
  • Prepares accurate and precise notes and technical reports.
  • Testifies as an expert witness regarding the scientific conclusions obtained from analysis.
  • Provides technical assistance to members of law enforcement and the criminal justice community.
  • Performs maintenance, calibration, and quality control on scientific instruments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Training and Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in a biology, chemistry, or forensic science-related area from an accredited college/university.
  • A minimum of nine semester or equivalent hours of coursework covering the subject areas of genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology along with coursework-in statistics and/or population genetics.
    • Survey or introductory coursework intended for non-science majors will not satisfy the above requirement.
    • Both overall academic record and applicable job experience will be factors for consideration; however, prior job experience will not replace the minimum academic requirement.

Preferred Training and Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in a biology, chemistry, or forensic science-related area from an accredited college/university.
  • A minimum of twelve semester or equivalent hours from a combination of undergraduate and graduate coursework covering the subject areas of genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, and statistics or population genetics. The twelve semester hours shall include at least one graduate level course register three or more semester hours.
  • Three or more years of human DNA experience as a qualified analyst on forensic samples.

  • Court-issued legal documentation supporting any legal name change (i.e., marriage certificate, divorce decree, etc.)
  • If you have prior military service, a copy of your DD214 with your separation code and the type of discharge you received.
  • A certified driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles from all states licensed over the past six years.
  • If you are a former law enforcement officer, provide all training certificates.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has a highly competitive pay plan.

The salary for this position is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

This position is eligible to receive an annual pay increase based on satisfactory performance evaluations.

Pay Incentives for Education and Spanish Fluency
