The South Carolina Highway Patrol, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Bluffton Police Department, and Hardeeville Police Department are partnering to launch Operation Safe Drive 278, a week-long initiative to enhance roadway safety for residents and visitors across Beaufort and Jasper Counties.
Operation Safe Drive 278 will take place September 22-27, 2025. The operation focuses on targeted enforcement and education in the following areas:
- Hands-Free Education – Encouraging drivers to avoid distractions from phones and electronic devices.
- Speeding – Reducing unsafe speeds to prevent collisions.
- Traffic Violations – Enforcing obedience to signals at intersections and other traffic laws.
- Improper Lane Changes – Promoting safe lane use and signaling.
- Move Over Law – Ensuring drivers yield to stopped emergency and service vehicles.
The partnership highlights the commitment of these law enforcement agencies to proactively address roadway safety challenges through collaboration, visibility, and community engagement.
Residents are encouraged to do their part by staying alert behind the wheel, slowing down, and making safety their top priority every time they drive.
While all traffic violations will be enforced, there is a special emphasis on violations related to South Carolina’s Move Over and Hands-Free laws. Drivers are strongly encouraged to move over and slow down for emergency vehicles, helping to protect those who protect and serve the community.
