“Blessed are the peacekeepers, for they will be called the children of God.” Matthew 5:9″

Twenty years later the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office remembers LCpl. Dana Tate and Cpl. Dyke “A.J.” Coursen who were shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call on Riley Road in Burton on January 8, 2002.

LCpl. Tate was a U.S. Navy veteran and had been a member of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office for more than four years.

Cpl. Coursen had been with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office for one year at the time of the incident.

Both were outstanding deputies and are sorely missed by their families, members of the Sheriff’s Office and the community they faithfully served.

Their deaths serve as a vivid reminder the dangers of our profession.

We will always remember and be inspired by the example they have given us.

Their spirit remains, like a handprint on our hearts.
