Man wanted for December 14 attempted murder arrested in Jasper County

Thursday, Dec. 16, 2021, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office deputies located and arrested Gilbert Hanners Jr., who was wanted for Attempted Murder in the Dec. 14 Westview Ave., Polk Village shooting.

Case History

At approximately 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a gunshot victim in Polk Village (Beaufort).

At the scene, deputies located an adult male who sustained gunshot wounds.

The scene was secured and Emergency Medical Services transported the wounded man to Beaufort Memorial Hospital (BMH).

It was learned that the subject responsible for the shooting fled the area before deputies arrived.

Investigation

Investigators interviewed witnesses and collected evidence from the scene.

Through interviews, investigators learned that the shooting was a targeted incident and the subject was identified as 23-year-old Gilbert Hanners Jr. of Beaufort.

Investigators met with a Beaufort County magistrate and obtained warrants for Hanners Jr. for Attempted Murder, Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime and Aggravated Breach of Peace.

When Hanners Jr. was not immediately located, he was listed in the National Crime Information Center as wanted.

Arrest of Hanners Jr.

Information was received that Hanners Jr. was in Jasper County.

Thursday, Dec. 16, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office deputies located and arrested Hanners Jr.

He was taken to the Jasper County Detention Center and held for Beaufort County.

Friday, Dec. 17, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies picked Hanners Jr. up and transported him to the Beaufort County Detention Center, where he was incarcerated on the three charges.

As of the time of this advisory, Hanners Jr. had yet to receive a bond hearing.

Update on Gunshot Victim

Following the shooting, the wounded man was transferred from BMH to the Medical University of South Carolina for treatment; he has since been released.
