On Friday, September 12, 2025, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a report of shots fired at the Preston Health Center at the Cypress of Hilton Head, located at 87 Birdsong Way.
Deputies arrived and responded to a patient’s room, where they located Harriett Kay Recker, 82, of Sun City, alongside her spouse, an 81-year-old man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries.
Recker was arrested on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. She is currently being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center.
The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office will release additional information regarding the victim pending notification of next of kin.
At no time was there a threat to the broader community. The investigation remains ongoing
