DEA drug take back events scheduled for Saturday, October 23, 2021, at two Beaufort County locations

According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an estimated 16.3 million people reported misusing psychotherapeutic drugs — prescription pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants and sedatives — in the past year. The majority of these prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, oftentimes from home medicine cabinets.

As it has in every city and county nationally, the prescription drug crisis has affected us here in Beaufort County.

To address the prescription drug crisis locally — and through a coordinated effort among the Beaufort County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Department, the Lowcountry Alliance for Healthy Youth and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office — Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) drug take back events have been scheduled for October 23, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the following locations:

Bluffton

The parking lot of the Beaufort County Government Center 4819 Bluffton Parkway, Bluffton, South Carolina 29910

Important Information

There will be no liquid medications, sharps, medical waste or inventory from medical practices accepted.

Unable to Participate on Saturday, October 23?

To provide a convenient and safe way for Beaufort County residents to dispose of unused and potential dangerous medications, prescription drug drop-off boxes were installed in Sheriff’s Office and government locations in Beaufort, Bluffton and on Hilton Head Island in 2018.

Since the installation of the boxes, and thanks to Beaufort County residents, more than 6,000 pounds of unused prescription medications have been collected by Sheriff’s Office personnel. These prescription drugs were properly disposed of and kept out of the wrong hands.

Beaufort County residents can find the drug drop-off boxes at the following locations:
