On the afternoon of July 29, 2021, Dwayne Gibbs Jr., 24, of Hilton Head Island was arrested for attempted murder in the July 26, 2021, Hilton Head Gardens shooting that wounded one man.
Case History
At around 12:45 p.m. July 26, 2021, Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of shots fired at the Hilton Head Gardens apartment complex on Southwood Park Drive on Hilton Head Island.
One man was injured in the shooting. He was treated at the Hilton Head Hospital and later transferred to Savannah Memorial.
At the scene, Sheriff’s Office deputies and investigators interviewed witnesses and processed for forensic evidence.
Several witnesses advised that a male subject, 24-year-old Dwayne Gibbs Jr., shot the man and fled following the shooting. .
A review of evidence collected from the scene corroborated witness statements that Gibbs was responsible for the shooting.
Gibbs was not immediately located.
Obtaining of Arrest Warrants
On July 27, 2021, investigators met with a Beaufort County magistrate and obtained arrest warrants for Gibbs for Attempted Murder and Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Violent Crime.
Investigators also obtained a warrant for Gibbs for Possession of a Handgun by Certain Persons Unlawful — as he has a prior conviction for a crime of violence.
Arrest of Dwayne Gibbs Jr.
At around 4:20 July 29, 2021, investigators located and arrested Gibbs at the Hallmark Apartments on Malphrus Road in Bluffton.
Gibbs, who is currently out on separate bonds and awaiting General Sessions Court appearances for firearms charges stemming from a December 2020 incident and a May 2021 incident, was transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center and incarcerated.
At this time, investigators are serving a search warrant at the apartment Gibbs was arrested at.
Residents and motorists in the area of Hallmark Apartments can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence over the next few hours.
Condition of Gunshot Victim
As of today, the man wounded in Monday’s Hilton Head Gardens shooting remains hospitalized and is in stable condition.
