A 76-year-old Hilton Head Plantation resident reported to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office that he had received an email from someone he believed to be the pastor of his church.
The email appeared to be valid and included the pastor’s name in the address.
The person sending the email asked the man to send money to an organization the church was supporting. The man was given instructions that he should purchase iTunes gift cards and email the access code on the back of the card to someone named Amy Whitefield.
After sending $600 in iTunes gift cards to the email address he was given, the man became suspicious
He contacted Apple to stop payment on the iTunes cards, but the $600 had already been extracted from the cards.
