Man found guilty, sentenced in 2020 St. Helena Island murder case

22-year-old Xavier Polite of Seabrook is sentenced to 37 years in prison.

On Thursday, a jury found Polite guilty on the charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

In the early afternoon hours on November 18, 2020, deputies were called to a residence on Stonewood Road on St. Helena Island for the report of a gunshot victim. Once there, deputies found 30-year-old Steven Glover of St. Helena deceased as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. Glover was shot seven times and his vehicle was struck by more than 30 bullets. Another victim, 27-year-old Corey Singleton, who was on scene at the time, was able to run away from the shooting to a neighbor’s home to call 911.

During the investigation, two persons of interest in Glover’s shooting death were identified: 21-year-old Channon Preston of St. Helena and 20-year-old Xavier Polite of Seabrook. After evaluating evidence in the case and following interviews, investigators charged Preston and Polite with murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
