About 9 p.m. on Aug. 4, 2015, 24-year-old Rhashard Spikes drove out of the Hilton Head Gardens apartment complex onto Southwood Park Drive and almost collided with another vehicle.

According to passengers in Spikes’ vehicle, following the near collision, Spikes and the male driver of the other vehicle exchanged word for a moment, then Spikes drove off. As Spikes drove onto William Hilton Parkway, the driver of the other vehicle turned around and sped to catch up to him. According to Spikes’s passengers, as the driver of the other vehicle caught up, one of his passengers shot at Spikes.

The other vehicle sped off, while Spikes, who was severely wounded, was driven to a nearby convenience store by his passengers. Paramedics responded to the convenience store parking lot and transported Spikes’ to the Hilton Head Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Investigators received information on possible persons of interest in this case, but the threshold of probable cause to file criminal charges has not been met.
