The American Red Cross operates shelters in the Lowcountry in the event of a natural disaster.

The American Red Cross only opens shelters in Beaufort County during tropical storms. If a storm is projected to make landfall at a Category 1 or above, no shelters will be open in Beaufort County.

Citizens can seek shelters in other counties, such as Hampton or Jasper. Shelter locations are based on the severity of the storm. Local officials will announce the locations of these shelters ahead of time, and law enforcement will provide security at the shelters.
