Where to find storm shelters

The American Red Cross operates shelters in the Lowcountry in the event of a natural disaster.

The American Red Cross only opens shelters in Beaufort County during tropical storms. If a storm is projected to make landfall at a Category 1 or above, no shelters will be open in Beaufort County.

Residents can seek shelters in other counties, such as Hampton or Jasper. Shelter locations are based on the severity of the storm. Local officials will announce the locations of these shelters ahead of time, and law enforcement will provide security at the shelters.

What to bring to storm shelters

A five-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day) and food that won’t spoil.
Your own bedding, water, hygiene items, toys for kids, reading materials, games, etc.
One change of clothing and footwear per person and one blanket or sleeping bag per person.
A first aid kit that includes your family’s prescription and over-the-counter medications.
Emergency tools including a battery-powered radio, flashlight and plenty of extra batteries.
An extra set of car keys and a credit card, cash or traveler’s checks.
Plastic trash bags.
Special items for infant, elderly or any disabled family members.
An extra pair of prescription glasses.
Keep important family documents in a waterproof container.
Pets are not allowed in shelters, unless they are a designated service animal.
