The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office arrested a St. Helena Island man Friday in connection with a murder that occurred last fall in Burton.
Tyre Joe Atkins, 21, of St. Helena Island, was arrested Friday, January 16, 2026, on the following charges:
- Murder
- Attempted murder
- Felon in possession of a weapon
- Possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime
- Aggravated breach of peace
Investigators identified Atkins as the suspect in the killing of Ty Haskell Jenkins IV, 20, also of St. Helena Island. The shooting occurred on September 10, 2025, at Independence Mobile Home Park, 60 Shanklin Road, in Burton.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.
