The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating several incidents involving shots fired on Saint Helena Island that occurred within a 15-hour span on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.
At about 2:20 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home on Shiney Road for the report of a gunshot victim. When they arrived, deputies found a 15-year-old female suffering from a single, non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
The teen was inside her home with five others when gunfire erupted from the roadway. The residence was struck by bullets, which penetrated the exterior, ultimately striking the victim.
She was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment.
This was the second time the same residence was impacted by gunfire. Earlier in the morning, shortly before 1 a.m., deputies responded to the same area of Shiney Road for a shots fired call.
Deputies found the same home had been struck by bullets. No one was injured during that barrage.
Evidence was collected from both events and will be forensically examined to determine if there is any connectivity between the two.
Also in the afternoon hours, deputies were called to Seaside Road after a man reported being grazed by a bullet.
The victim, a 24-year-old man, called deputies at 2:45 p.m. stating he was home alone when he heard gunfire. The bullets penetrated his home, and he sustained a non-life-threatening injury, presumably from a bullet. The man did not require any medical aid.
Investigators are also working to determine if the two afternoon incidents could be connected.
